Therese Elsey

Perinatal Mental Health Clinician

Therese is a Credentialed Mental Health Nurse with extensive experience and education in Perinatal and Infant Mental Health.

Prior to going into private practice in 2013, Therese worked as a Perinatal Clinical Nurse Specialist / Consultant in the Perinatal and Infant Mental Health team at Central Coast Health for 9 years.

Along with the joys of parenthood comes the challenges. Parenting has been considered one of the hardest jobs in the world, and the struggles often go unrecognised. The impact of poor parental mental health is becoming well known and researched. The perinatal period (typically during pregnancy and up to the child's 3rd birthday) is a time of enormous growth and development for an infant/child and having a parent with a mental illness can significantly impact on a child's emotional, mental and physical health.

Therese provides mental health support, and counselling and therapy services specific to this period of development. This is done in both an individual and/or group setting, for women in the perinatal period, whose mental illness and/or mental health issues (including anxiety, depression, complex trauma, grief and loss, birth trauma, adjustment to parenting) impact on their functioning in the pre- and postnatal period.

The focus of this therapeutic work comes from within an Attachment Theory framework, drawing largely from Circle of Security® parenting principles. The approach to therapy is an integrated and holistic one, utilising a combination of modalities including positive oriented counselling, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Interpersonal Therapy (IPT), Mindfulness-based and DBT-informed strategies, as well as the use of Hypnotherapy, Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)

As a registered Circle of Security® (COS) Parenting Facilitator, Therese utilises the principles of the COS philosophy throughout daily practice. In addition, Therese regularly facilitates the 8-week COS Parenting Program.

These services are provided under a number of different programs, some with Medicare and/or Private Health Fund rebates.
